READY-TO-WEAR AND HAUTE COUTURE
WHAT IS READY-TO-WEAR AND WHAT IS HAUTE COUTRE
I have been repeatedly asked, “Please can I bring my fabric to you, I have this design I saw in a magazine or I saw a celebrity wearing a design I like and I want it”. And, my answer has always been the same, I design READY-TO-WEAR and HAUTE COUTURE pieces if the need be. I have had to give this reply for well over 3 years since I introduce my label and sincerely speaking, it sometimes gets me upset, as I have often wonder if Nigerians don’t understand the simple word Ready-to-wear or prêt-à-porter, often abbreviated RTW, or “off-the-rack” or “off-the-peg” but in a lame man term, its referred to as “factory-made clothing sold in finished condition, in standardized sizes”.
WHAT’S A “HAUTE COUTURE OR BESPOKE PIECE”
HAUTE COUTURE is French, and it means “high sewing” or “high fashion”. It simply means, to create an exclusive custom-fitted clothing and its usually made from high quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable sewers. Considering the
amount of time, money and skill that is allotted to each piece that in the end it’s described as Haute Couture and it’s usually accompanied with an expensive price tag. So, the next time you want to shop, whether it’s my label or another brand, I hope that with these few simple tips you wouldn’t be confuse but go straight for what
you want and before I log off, let’s look at what READY-TO-WEAR AND HAUTE COUTURE look like.
